BIO
Jamie was born in Seoul, Korea. At the age of one, she moved to Chicago where she lived until her family settled in the L.A. area, about the time she was entering grade school.
Jamie was 5 when she started her classical violin studies under Soon Park. By her high school years, her reputation as a premier young violinist was secured, winning a gold medal at the Bach Festival, Grand prize at the LA Korean Times competition and playing at Dorothy Chandler Pavilion.
At 18, she took a much needed break from her classical training and decided to become a street musician, traveling up the coast of California; from San Diego to Venice, Santa Barbara to Big Sur, though San Francisco all the way to Oregon, playing with every musician she met and was introduced to many new styles & genres. While in Oregon, she was filmed as part of the documentary on the Grateful Dead, "Tie-Died, Rock n Roll's most Deadicated Fans." This spiritual journey of breaking free renewed her love of music and she decided that music would be her path.
She took a trip to Europe. Her european travels brought her one night to the Piazza di Spagna in Rome. Music being sung in many languages on the steps that night would begin a musical journey that has culminated in the release of her debut cd of original songs 'Music From a Love Shared'.
Playing with a long list of San Diego's finest musicians, Jamie has developed a sound that is truly unique. The blues were Jamie's first love. Playing with great local bluesmen, trading lick for lick, Jamie held her own with soulful sounds and electrifying runs influenced by Stuff Smith, Papa John Creach and B.B.King.
Jamie's country sound would be employed beautifully by Paul Kamanski on his Comanche Moon CD Old Dogs. The experience of working with a songwriter like Paul, one who sang and produced his own music, inspired her to begin focusing on her own songbook which had grown to a considerable number of songs over the years.
Jamie's move into jazz came with playing with saxophone legend Joe Marillo, who introduced her to many local jazz greats including trumpeter Gilbert Castellanos & pianist Mikan Zlatkovich. Then came Mahaba, a mostly women's jazz ensemble, with the exception of David Millard, a multi instrumental jazz wizard. Mahaba was featured on KSDS Jazz Live, concerts at Dizzy's and the Catamaran and soon developed a large following
Jamie's contribution of original material and the reception it recieved from Mahaba's audience was all she needed to recognize it was time to start her own project and define her musical vision.
In 2005, she put together a very special night at Dizzy's in a tribute to brazilian composer Antonio Carlos Jobim. With a stellar cast of musicians on a hot August night; Jaime Valle on guitar, Mikan on piano, Bob Magnusson on bass, Carlos Vazquez on drums, Joe on sax & Millard on flute, they bought the cool breeze of brazilian samba to San Diego. She followed this show 2 months later with a tribute on violin to another great composer, Michel Legrand.
In 2000, Jamie created shadowlightstudios.com with classic album artist John Paul Jones, who was art director for Bill Graham & Carlos Santana. Shadowlight Studios is a multi-media design company with a specialty in promotional image support for the San Diego music community. Together, they have created websites, cd covers and posters for many SD talents such as Peter Sprague, Gilbert Castellanos, Joe Marillo, MIkan Zlatkovich, James East, Coral Thuet, Dizzy's, Chuck Perrin and more.
While designing CD packages, websites, doing session work, teaching and gigging, Jamie was compiling her Shadowlight Songbook. Best known for her violin, "Music From a Love Shared" will introduce you to the voice of a new songwriter. Producing this effort opened new dimensions for Jamie. Somewhere in the sharing of her songbook, Jamie's full musical talents wiill be revealed for the soul she brings everything she touches.
